Vineyard and Region Information: It's incredible how different another Syrah from our Estate Vineyard can be. Old Corral is the eternal reminder that maintaining transparency to site is our end-game. Ultimately, transparency is about revealing all of the nuance and detail a given site has to offer, and if that site is extraordinary, an extraordinary wine is the result. Each of the 'Alban Powerblock' selection vines in Old Corral are planted only three feet apart. The dramatic, steeply terraced rows these vines are planted to are similar to extreme vineyards in the world's top Syrah regions in the Northern Rhone Valley. These hand farmed vineyards force you to invest a lot for little (grapes) in return. But what you do at harvest proves that it is worth what it takes.
Vintage Notes: Despite an abundance of wonderful vintages in recent years, 2013 remains one of our favorites. An early start to the season was followed by a long, moderate growing season. Yields were healthy, but not excessive. Decent weather through harvest allowed us to pick the fruit exactly when we thought it was at its peak.
Old Corral is a multilayered expression of a Syrah. Opaque dark garnet color, with black plums, huckleberries, spice notes, graphite and higher toned floral essence on the nose. Rich, vibrant and fully bodied on the palate with hints of red spicy fruit lingering on the mid palate for an extended finish. Approachable now, we would expect this wine to continue evolving in a positive way for many years.
Wine Reviews: "The 2013 Syrah Old Corral is another powerful and intense wine from Big Basin. The more brooding, virile side of Syrah comes through loud and clear. A host of game, smoke, incense, licorice and tobacco wrap around the deep, dark fruit. There is plenty to like, that much is obvious. This is another beautifully crafted wine from Bradley Brown and Big Basin.” ** - Antonio Galloni, Vinous - 92 points **
"Candied black cherries, black raspberry, violets and caramelized meats dominate the bouquet of the 2013 Syrah Old Corral (100% Syrah), which saw a small amount of whole clusters and 21 months in 10% new 300-liter barrels. Rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured and layered, it will drink nicely for a decade.” ** - Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker Jr's Wine Advocate - 92 points **
