Vineyard and Region Information: We source our Coastview Chardonnay from two sets of terraces which face North and North East. We feel this aspect is optimal in this high elevation vineyard where the sun can shine intensely and we like to see the fruit ripen gradually. We have also noticed that as a result of underlying differences in the soils, these blocks each produce unique signatures of Chardonnay with the North-facing terraces having more weight and depth, while the East-facing terraces bring intense varietal character and floral notes.
Vintage Notes: 2016 was a beautiful vintage - good yields, a moderate growing season and decent weather through harvest - that allowed us to nail the pick dates perfectly and make wines with minimal intervention.
Wine Notes: The 2016 Coastview Vineyard Chardonnay is very aromatic with a cornucopia of white stone fruits, palm fruit, citris with marzipan, crushed rocks and hints of reduction which bring to mind classic top end white burgundy. It is mouth filling with a beautiful balance of acidity and tannins which carries the finish long. Each of the notes perceived on the nose carries through to the palate. With each successive year, we are fine tuning how we make this wine as we strive to be more transparent to the vineyard to really let it sing. We feel this is probably our best effort to find its way to your glass so far.
Approachable at release, though improved significantly with a decanting, the wine will continue to gain complexity and character over the next 3-5 years and age gracefully for at least 10+ years, especially from magnum. We recommend pairing this wine with seafood, white meats with citrus glazes, or simply enjoyed on a nice afternoon.
Wine Reviews: Antonio Galloni, Vinous. 93 points “The 2016 Chardonnay Coastview Vineyard is a big wine built on phenolics and savoriness rather than on overt fruit. There is a real sense of mountain structure running through the wine. Powerful and ample in feel, with superb freshness, the 2016 offers terrific nuance as well as complexity.”
Jeb Dunnuck. 92 points “The light gold-colored 2016 Coastview Chardonnay, from a site in Monterey County, spent 12 months in neutral barrels followed by 7 months in stainless steel. It has a smoking bouquet of lemon curd, toasted spices, white flowers, and honeyed pineapple, with just a hint of brioche and toastiness. It’s clean, vibrant, and pure, with a touch of Aubert-like aromas and flavors yet more focus and precision, although less oomph. Drink it over the coming decade.”
