Vineyard and Region Information: In 2008, I convinced Coastview's owner John Allen to bud-over some existing Syrah vines which were having trouble getting ripe at the base of a North-facing hill to Pinot Noir. We took cuttings of various Dijon-clones from the Alfaro Vineyard including 113, 114, 115, 667 and 777, plus some Pisoni selection and established them on a one+ acre block. Since that time, John has budded over additional blocks to Pisoni and Swan selections of Pinot Noir. Our 2016 vintage includes all of these selections.
Vintage Notes: 2016 was a beautiful vintage - good yields, a moderate growing season and decent weather through harvest - that allowed us to nail the pick dates perfectly and make wines with minimal intervention.
Wine Notes: The aromatics literally leap out the glass and fill your olfactory passages with a complex melange of wild berry, black cherry and pomegranate fruits, crushed flowers and granite. One has to spend a bit of time with it in the attempt to unwind these aromatics. On the palate, the wine is silky with beautiful body and intense, tightly wound fruit which is supported by vibrant acidity and a long finish that allows it to unfold gracefully. The fruit echoes the nose with pomegranate, black cherry and wild berry with hints of baking spice on the finish. A decant is strongly recommended on this wine in the short term and we expect it to handsomely reward extended cellar aging (who knows, maybe 20 years would be a beautiful thing for this wine).
Wine Reviews: ** PinotFile, Rusty Gaffney. 96 points ** "Moderate garnet color in the glass. The aromas of black cherry, purple grape, spice cabinet and mulch soar in this gifted wine. Black cherry and boysenberry fruit flavors flood the mouth with goodness. There is plenty of spice and smart oak to enhance the pleasure. The balance is spot-on with exquisitely integrated tannins, acidity and oak, the mouthfeel is sleek and polished, and the finish is uplifting and juicy. Flat-out amazing when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle the following day. Both swagger and finesse in one package."
** Jeb Dunnuck. 95 points ** "The 2016 Coastview Vineyard Pinot Noir is one of the more delicate wines, with pretty red fruits, smoked earth, spring flowers, and spice aromas and flavors. Like all of Bradley's wines, it has juicy acidity and terrific purity, is medium-bodied, elegant and lively. It also has a vibrant, poised style that's going to age beautifully. It's one of my favorites in the lineup but needs 3-4 years of bottle age. This saw 88% whole clusters and spent 18 months in 42% new French oak."
** Vinous, Antonio Galloni. 93+ points ** "A classy, polished wine, the 2016 Pinot Noir Coastview Vineyard is also one of the most reticent Pinots in the range. That won't be an issue in a few years' time, but for now readers should plan on being patient. Dried cherry, mint, dried flowers, anise and crushed rose petal are all finely sketched in this beautifully chiseled Pinot Noir from Big Basin.”
