Vineyard and Region Information: The combination of Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon from the famed Montebello Ridge along with Syrah from the granitic Gabilan Mountains (an area we believe to be one of the premiere Rhone-varietal growing regions in California), produces a wine of exceptional intensity and concentration.
Vintage Notes: Our 2016 Odeon is our tenth vintage of this label unique to Big Basin. 2016 was a beautiful vintage in many respects. A decent set led to healthy yields at harvest, and a long moderate growing season produced beautiful fruit. The 2016 vintage is aromatically beautiful with depth to back it up on the palate.
Wine Notes: Each year we try to hone our winemaking to reveal more of the beauty that the fruit from these exceptional vineyards delivers. To that end, we increased the percentage of whole cluster to 60% which we feel adds to the aromatic and textural complexity of the wine, and helps elevate the aromatics. We also used a little bit less new oak so as to be even more transparent to the beauty of the fruit that this there.
The aromatics wafting out of the glass are truly a melange of Cabernet and Syrah. The Cabernet lends it notes of cassis and cedar while the Syrah lends it some high toned perfumed fruit along with cigar box and a brooding spice note. The black, inky fruit with that unmistakable cassis perfume that only a Cabernet hailing from a vineyard at 2200 ft on Black Mtn next to Ridge can deliver. On the palate, vibrant red plum and black currant notes lead the way. On day two, it was even more intense with palate coating fruit and substantial extract that finished long. The dominant notes included blackberries, cassis, crushed rocks with hints of asphalt. The tannins are still a touch grippy, but progressing resolving with more time in bottle. Pair this wine with a Holiday roast, a barbecue feast or a Sunday Game buffet.
