Vineyard and Region Information: The Brokentop Ranch vineyard sits on a ridge top overlooking the Monterey Bay at about 800 feet just a couple of miles from the bay. The cool site combined with poor soils produces a Viognier with fantastic minerality and crushed white flower aromatics. If you appreciate the more nuanced and elegant old world examples of Viognier, then this wine is for you.
Vintage Notes: 2017 was an excellent vintage in virtually all respects. A good set during Spring flowering set us up for good yields. Temperatures remained fairly moderate all year until just before harvest when a substantial heat spike impacted some vineyards. Fortunately, the Brokentop Ranch vineyard has an East-facing aspect which greatly reduces the effect of the most extreme late afternoon heat. Yields were down somewhat in this vintage, so we barely had enough wine for a half barrel. This tiny 350+ vine vineyard is farmed as an extension of our main estate vineyard with identical practices.
Wine Notes: On the nose, the Brokentop Viognier expresses delicate pear or asian pear notes along with a briny and mineral background. Dense and supple on the palate with just enough acidity to get one’s mouth watering through the finish. This is a delicate and subtle Viognier that is more mineral driven than fruity, but it is the texture and density without being viscous that sets this wine apart from typical California Viognier.
