2017 Coastview Vineyard Grenache

2017 Coastview Vineyard Grenache

Vineyard and Region Information: In 2009 we grafted some steeply terraced Syrah vines along a southeast facing knoll to a Grenache selection from our Estate Vineyard, which is planted to Grenache from John Alban. It took a few years before the vines came into balance and started producing consistent crops with evenly ripened fruit. We held off from attempting a 100% Grenache wine until we had something that we felt expressed the potential of Grenache from this site. The 2012 vintage was the first such vintage. Four more vintages went by before we decided to try our hand again making a 100% Grenache in 2016 from these terraces.

Vintage Notes: Grenache is a challenging varietal to grow in sites where it finds its most eloquent expression - that is the rocky sites where the vines struggle. The vines produce a very dense canopy which can create issues with mildew. At the same time, the clusters are very easily sun bleached so one must be careful to try to keep the clusters shaded for most of the day. Grenache yields can also be either excessive and require substantial fruit thinning, or they can be tiny from a poor set. 2017 was an excellent vintage in virtually all respects. A good set during Spring flowering set us up for good yields. Temperatures remained fairly moderate all year until just before harvest when a substantial heat spike impacted some vineyards. Fortunately, the high elevation, mountain top exposure and proximity to Monterey Bay of the Coastview Vineyard helps moderate those heat spikes.

Wine Notes: Deep red and black fruits on the nose with crushed rocks. There is a purity to the fruit that comes from aging in a large concrete tank which also carries across to the palate. The tannins are dense and still evolving with the fine stem tannin and more granular skin tannin still in the process of melding together. Grenache typically takes more time in the cellar to reveal its full beauty, so while approachable now, it will gain depth with time.
