2017 Coastview Vineyard Pinot Noir

2017 Coastview Vineyard Pinot Noir

Vineyard and Region Information: In 2008, I convinced Coastview's owner John Allen to bud-over some existing Syrah vines which were having trouble getting ripe at the base of a North-facing hill to Pinot Noir. We took cuttings of various Dijon-clones from the Alfaro Vineyard including 113, 114, 115, 667 and 777, plus some Pisoni selection and established them on a one+ acre block. Since that time, John has budded over additional blocks to Pisoni and Swan selections of Pinot Noir. Our 2017 vintage includes all of these selections.

Vintage Notes: 2017 was an excellent vintage in virtually all respects. A good set during Spring flowering set us up for good yields. Temperatures remained fairly moderate all year until just before harvest when a substantial heat spike impacted some vineyards. Fortunately, the high elevation, mountain top exposure and proximity to Monterey Bay of the Coastview Vineyard helps moderate those heat spikes.

Wine Notes: This is our ninth vintage of Coastview Pinot Noir and we can definitely say that experience with a vineyard counts when it comes to getting the most out of it, and finding that balance that delivers a compelling and age worthy wine. We have worked hard in the vineyard to ensure proper management to obtain the lignified canes we need to use whole cluster without any intrusive or dry tannin. We have learned to better anticipate the rapid ripening that occurs just before harvest so that we do not overshoot, or jump the gun on picking. Given the challenges of 2017 with heat spikes heading into harvest, nailing the pick was not a walk in the park, but I feel we could not have done better with this wine. All of the pieces are there in the balance we like to see them.

On the nose, an especially spicy vintage is revealed with notes of baking spice, cigar box and crushed rocks with perfumed high toned fruit that falls in the pomegranate and framboise end of the spectrum. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and unctuous while having a sense of weightlessness. The fruit is penetrating and mouth coating with a long mouth watering finish that leaves one looking forward to another sip.
