Vineyard and Region Information: Our 2017 Odeon is our eleventh vintage of this label unique to Big Basin. In 2017, we decided to make a Brosseau Vineyard designate Odeon with all of fruit coming from this one vineyard. A decent set led to healthy yields at harvest, and a long moderate growing season produced beautiful fruit. There was not much Cabernet Sauvignon available from Brosseau, but what we did get had very small berries and produced intense wine, just like the Syrah. This vineyard in the Chalone AVA is dominated by decomposed granite soils, but also has substantial outcrops of calcareous shale (high in lime). These soils make for a wine of exceptional intensity and concentration. The 2017 vintage is aromatically beautiful with depth to back it up on the palate.
Wine Notes: Each year we try to hone our winemaking to reveal more of the beauty that the fruit from these exceptional vineyards delivers. To that end, we used 56% whole clusters which we feel adds to the aromatic and textural complexity of the wine, and helps elevate the aromatics. This vintage included no new oak so as to be even more transparent to the beauty of the fruit.
Characteristics that I often associate with the Chalone AVA come through clearly on this wine - crushed rocks, deep, exuberant and perfumed fruit notes, and a vibrant acidity on the palate that makes this wine sing. This wine is deliciously fruity while also expressing beautify minerality and tannins that will make this an age worthy wine. This finish goes on an on and reveals additional layers of fruit and spice that keep one coming back for more.
Pair this wine with a Holiday roast, a barbecue feast or a Sunday Game buffet.
