Vineyard and Region Information: Coastview Vineyard is a site we have been working with since 2007 and we believe it to be one of the most extraordinary vineyards in California. Planted on a mountain top at 2200 feet overlooking the Monterey Bay and Salinas Valley, it benefits from the cool breezes from the ocean and high elevation. The decomposed granite and limestone soils also contribute to producing exceptional fruit. The owner, John Allen, offered me the fruit for his special Bordeaux variety blocks at the top of the vineyard in 2015 and I jumped at the chance to work with these varietals from such an exceptional vineyard. The famed Ridge Montebello Vineyard is located at a similar elevation on a mountain top located next to the San Andreas Fault and near the cooling effect of the Santa Cruz Mountains and San Francisco Bay. Coastview is probably the only other vineyard in the state which resides in a similar location and elevation with exceptional soils to match.

Vintage Notes: 2018 was a year that defied all expectations. Acid levels were through the roof and after multiple drought vintages where sugar levels could rise rapidly, this year they barely moved over two to three weeks. The made is a winemaker's harvest where we could really fine tune the pick dates. We harvested this fruit on September 25th (relatively late in the season). We fermented the fruit in three separate fermentation lots: 1) Merlot at 56% whole cluster, 2) Field Blend at 39% whole cluster, and 3) Mixed Cabernet lot at 12% whole cluster- resulting in 42% whole cluster overall. We used mostly neutral oak, and the 3 out of 10 barrels that were new were our special toast French oak with a light long toast. These barrels amplify the wine without imparting oak flavors.

Wine Notes: In 2018, we picked this fruit a touch riper than in past vintages, so the fruit comes through more intensely. Cassis, chocolate, pen ink, graphite mingle on the nose. Bright and vibrant on the palate, with intense fruit, yet refreshing and not overwrought. Substantial chewy tannins that will age beautifully. Long sappy finish with nice fruit extract that finishes long. This is a wine that will benefit substantially from another year or two of bottle age. Both the 2016 and 2017 vintages have continued to improve with cellar time as the tannins have melded together and softened, and we would expect the same for this vintage. We have no doubt these wines have a long life ahead of them when cellared properly.
