Vineyard and Region Information: The Brokentop Ranch vineyard sits on a ridge top overlooking the Monterey Bay at about 800 feet just a couple of miles from the bay. The cool site combined with poor soils produces a Viognier with fantastic minerality and crushed white flower aromatics. If you appreciate the more nuanced and elegant old world examples of Viognier, then this wine is for you.
Vintage Notes: This was a year that defied all expectations. Acid levels were through the roof. After multiple draught vintages where sugar could jump 3 brix in less than a week (the difference of 2% alcohol!), they barely moved over two to three weeks. The made is a winemakers harvest where we could really fine tune the pick dates.
Wine Notes: The Brokentop Viognier has a beautiful nose of white peach, pear, crushed white flowers. There is nice density on the palate with impeccable balance that carries a long slow finish. Classic Viognier with freshness, white stone fruit, and weight without being heavy or high in alcohol. I think this might be my personal favorite vintage out of this tiny and manicured vineyard farmed by my brother Derek with the same organic protocol used at our main estate vineyard.
