Vineyard and Region Information: The cool Santa Cruz Mountains are ideal for producing a Roussanne that is aromatically complex with finesse and body, but without becoming ponderous and heavy. It is a challenging variety to grow as it tends to ripen unevenly. We have found that it is necessary to make more than one harvest pass through the vineyard with pickers that are trained to identify clusters that are in the window of ideal ripeness.
Vintage Notes: This was a year that defied all expectations. Acid levels were through the roof. After multiple draught vintages where sugar could jump 3 brix in less than a week (the difference of 2% alcohol!), they barely moved over two to three weeks heading into harvest. This made it a winemaker's harvest where we could really fine tune the pick dates.
Wine Notes: Our practice with this wine has been to ferment and age approximately half of it in a 600 liter clay amphora from Italy with the remainder fermented and aged in barrels. Then at about the one year mark, we rack all of the wine into a stainless steel tank where it ages for another six months prior to bottling. If you are not a fan of Roussanne already, this wine is very likely to make you one! The 2018 estate Roussanne has abundant white flower and honeysuckle on the nose with an underlying vein of minerality. Sappy, silky and creamy on the palate, the texture is in beautiful balance. Add in a delicious mid palate and finish and you have the makings for a rapidly consumed Roussanne. 92 points- Antonio Galloni, Vinous
