2018 Santa Cruz Mountains Syrah

2018 Santa Cruz Mountains Syrah

2018 Santa Cruz Mountains Syrah

Vineyard and Region Information: 2018 was a beautiful vintage for our estate Syrah vineyard which is the primary source of fruit for this wine. Our steep hillsides are only six miles from the Pacific and located right next to a major wind gap that allows the cool coastal breezes and fog to flow over the vineyard. We saw excellent color and flavor development at lower sugar levels yielding a modest 14% alcohol in the final wine. Yields and quality were excellent.

Wine Notes: We have been steadily increasing the quantity of whole clusters used with this wine as we find that it can amplify mouthfeel and savory qualities in the finished wine. In 2018, we fermented nearly every lot of our estate Syrah with 100% whole clusters. We also included a small amount of Viognier in some of the fermentations which can add additional complexity and accentuate the floral qualities that exist with our Syrah.

Brooding, dark and wild berry fruit on nose with hints of lavender. Intense and vibrant on the palate, this wine no doubt needs another year or two to unwind, though works great now with a hamburger or juicy New York steak to balance the tannins. Another day of air and this Syrah reveals indian spice, pen ink on the nose, and is deep, rich and full bodied on the palate.

Wine Reviews: “The 2018 Syrah (Santa Cruz Mountains) is one of the standouts in this range. Bold, deep and savory, the 2018 is endowed with striking depth from start to finish. The 100% whole clusters add tons of aromatic intensity, but are also nicely integrated into the wine’s fabric. I would give the tannins a few years to soften. There is plenty to look forward to. Alban Côte-Rôtie selection Syrah with a dollop of Viognier is pure magic. This is a fabulous appellation-level Syrah.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous. 93 Points
