2019 Coastview Vineyard Pinot Noir

2019 Coastview Vineyard Pinot Noir

Vineyard and Region Information: In 2008, I convinced Coastview's owner John Allen to bud-over some existing Syrah vines which were having trouble getting ripe at the base of a North-facing hill to Pinot Noir. We took cuttings of various Dijon-clones from the Alfaro Vineyard including 113, 114, 115, 667 and 777, plus some Pisoni selection and established them on a one+ acre block. Since that time, John has budded over additional blocks to Pisoni and Swan selections of Pinot Noir. Our 2019 vintage includes all of these selections.

Vintage Notes: The 2019 growing season was preceded by a wet winter with several rainstorms spread out between November 2018 through end of May 2019, totaling around 70 inches in rain. Bud break was late due to the cold, wet soils, but an early June heat wave with temps >100F caused the vines and cover crops to take off. Despite a few late rain events, there was good weather for bloom and fruit set and the crop was above average. July and August were relatively cool, slowing veraison, then warming into September for nearly ideal weather for final ripening. In general, most picks began a bit later than normal (mid to late September). The exception was Corralitos. The marine layer was weak for most of the 2019 growing season and there was very little fog on the coast, so Corralitos experienced a warm vintage. We picked Pinot Noir in Corralitos before the Estate, and the Chardonnay from Howard before Coastview, both a reversal of normal. All together, a very good growing season.

Wine Notes: Gorgeous nose of perfumed black fruit and crushed rocks. Super silky and unctuous on the palate, juicy and mouthwatering. It is surprising how fine the tannin are and how silky the mouthfeel is as this vineyard can tend to be more tannic. There is just enough weight to extend the finish for a solid 60 seconds without being heavy in the least. The fruit is pure, concentrated and fresh with complex notes of red and black wild berries intermingling. Every piece fits together seamlessly and the end result is a wine that is simply delicious.
