2019 Homestead Block Roussanne

Vineyard Information: In 2007, we planted one acre of what remains the only planting of Roussanne in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We chose an Alban field selection and like most Roussanne it requires diligent vine management and ripens unevenly requiring multiple picking passes. We feel the effort is worth it and we are consistently rewarded with a Roussanne that expresses beautiful texture and aromatics. The vineyard is Certified Organic by CCOF and we believe our commitment to organics results in a healthier vineyard and better wine.

Vintage Notes: The 2019 growing season was preceded by a wet winter with several rainstorms spread out between November 2018 through end of May 2019, totaling around 70 inches in rain. Bud break was late due to the cold, wet soils, but an early June heat wave with temps >100F caused the vines and cover crops to take off. Despite a few late rain events, there was good weather for bloom and fruit set and the crop was above average.July and August were relatively cool, slowing veraison, then warming into September for nearly ideal weather for final ripening. A notoriously late and uneven ripening varietal, we started our pick on October 26th and completed it on November 2nd. All together, a very good growing season.

Wine Notes: Our Estate grown Roussanne was whole cluster pressed and fermented using only native yeast with minimal intervention. Half of the wine was fermented and aged half in a 600L clay amphora and half in French oak for 1 year. It was all then aged for an additional 6 months in stainless steel.

White flowers, Meyer lemon zest and a distinctive wet stone minerality tease the nose. All of these flavors are echoed on the palate with not a hint of oak barrel coming through. In this vintage, the clay amphora fermentation and aging definitely amplifies this sense of pure fruit and stone.
