2019 Howard Family Vineyard Chardonnay

2019 Howard Family Vineyard Chardonnay

2019 Howard Family Vineyard Chardonnay

Vineyard and Region Information: The Howard Family Vineyard in Corralitos is a short distance from the Lester Family Vineyard. This cool site just miles from Monterey Bay is perfect for producing a Chardonnay with minimal intervention and great natural acidity. It is a rarity in California vineyards in that it is over 40 years old. The vineyard is farmed by Prudy Foxx (who also farms Lester Family Vineyard) and is planted to the Wente selection of Chardonnay which is known to produce Chardonnays with excellent acidity.

Vintage Notes: The 2019 growing season was preceded by a wet winter with several rainstorms spread out between November 2018 through end of May 2019, totaling around 70 inches in rain. Bud break was late due to the cold, wet soils, but an early June heat wave with temps >100F caused the vines and cover crops to take off. Despite a few late rain events, there was good weather for bloom and fruit set and the crop was above average. July and August were relatively cool, slowing veraison, then warming into September for nearly ideal weather for final ripening. In general, most picks began a bit later than normal (mid to late September). The exception was Corralitos. The marine layer was weak for most of the 2019 growing season and there was very little fog on the coast, so Corralitos experienced a warm vintage. We picked Pinot Noir in Corralitos before the Estate, and the Chardonnay from Howard before Coastview, both a reversal of normal. All together, a very good growing season.

Wine Notes: A pale golden yellow with wonderful clarity. On the nose, it expresses a beautiful varietal purity with delicate lemon meringue notes and hints of crushed flowers that give it an exotic air. It has wonderful body and silky texture on the palate with vibrant acidity to keep it fresh and alive. Tasted blind, one could easily mistake this for a cousin from Burgundy. The tiny amount of new oak that was used is difficult at best to detect. At this early juncture less than six months after bottling, the wine is a bit shy and closed down. If past vintages are any indication, then another 6-12 months will allow this wine to blossom into a more seductive and expressive version of itself. That said, it is absolutely delicious now, however, do not serve it too cold (fridge temp). A serving temperature of around 45 degrees should be just about right.
