The Wirz Vineyard is located in the Cienega Valley - part of the San Andreas Rift zone. This high valley is located at about 1,000 ft elevation on the East side of the Gabilan Mountains. The valley is filled with alluvial deposits of granite and limestone from the mountains. This high valley traps the cold mountain air at night, so large diurnal swings in temperature are the norm.
Vintage Notes: The 2019 growing season was preceded by a wet winter with several rainstorms spread out between November 2018 through end of May 2019, totaling around 70 inches in rain. Bud break was late due to the cold, wet soils, but an early June heat wave with temps >100F caused the vines and cover crops to take off. Despite a few late rain events, there was good weather for bloom and fruit set and the crop was above average.July and August were relatively cool, slowing veraison, then warming into September for nearly ideal weather for final ripening. In general, most picks began a bit later than normal (mid to late September). All together, a very good growing season.
